Arbor Guy conducted a site wide tree survey which involved gathering the precise location and specific attribute data on all significant trees within the Valley of the Giants. The trees were surveyed using a Trimble GeoExplorer 6000 to map their locations and gather relevant data on each tree. The data was compiled in an Excel spreadsheet for ease of reference and then exported in shapefile for use with GIS and Autocad software. Detailed site maps were created in QGIS to show all tree locations in relation to roads, buildings and infrastructure allowing site management to quickly and easily reference individual trees. The intention of the project was to provide management of the site with unprecedented data for the their planning and visitor risk management.
Consulting meetings prior to gathering the data meant a tailored report template could be developed to gather specific data relevant to the requirements of the walk; whilst meeting all arboricultural requirements as per the code of practice “pruning of amenity trees”.
